Well-Known Comedian Killed in Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident in Tarzana, California, 18-Year-Old Driver Under Arrest

A community is reeling from the death of a well-known comedian who was tragically killed last month in a hit-and-run accident while he was on foot. According to local news reports, 72-year-old Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley comedian Perry Kurtz was crossing the street at the intersection of Ventura Boulevard and Corbin Avenue in Tarzana, when a driver in a gray-colored Honda Civic sedan hit him. After the driver in the Honda Civic hit Kurtz, he drove off without stopping, classifying the deadly pedestrian accident as a hit-and-run. The hit-and-run suspect was found later, and the driver was apprehended. Officers found the vehicle approximately a half mile from the scene of the fatal pedestrian accident. The Civic had damage to its front end and a smashed windshield. The incident occurred at around 11:20 p.m. in the evening.

As a result of causing the death of Kurtz and for fleeing the scene, 18-year-old Nathon Jaimes, the driver of the Honda Civic, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing death. Jaimes is reported to have been released from police custody at around 8:43 a.m. on Friday morning, August 16, the morning after the deadly pedestrian accident took Kurtz’s life.

On Kurtz’s last moments, fellow comedian Ryan Talmo said, “He went across the street to the bowling alley to say hi to us. We do comedy across the street, came to say hi to his friends and he was hanging out with us for like 15 minutes and then he came across the street, came back to sing some more karaoke … apparently someone hit him on Ventura.” Another comedian who worked with Kurtz, Bruce Balm, added, “He was one of those guys that, regardless of how things were going, he was always very positive…He never gave up. He’s always doing comedy or karaoke.”
