The Santa Cruz Police Department concluded its investigation into a deadly bus accident that happened at the University of California at Santa Cruz in 2023. According to local news reports, investigators revealed important details about the bus accident that claimed one life and injured 5 on December 12, 2023 at the well-known university campus. The accident that injured five students and resulted in the death of the bus driver occurred at the edge of the University of California campus on Coolidge Drive. At around 8:30 p.m. on that tragic evening, Dan Stevenson, who was driving the bus, is said to have veered off the road and into a brick kiln.
UC Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Domby said of the tragic and scary bus accident, “On the day of the crash, Mr. Stevenson made several loops without incident and could be seen on video less than a minute before the crash with the bus’s lights, brakes, and steering working as the bus made a right turn onto Coolidge Drive from Hagar Drive. The bus had just entered a sweeping left-hand curve on Coolidge Drive just past Ranch View Road toward the campus entrance. For an unknown reason, the bus veered off the right roadway edge where it collided with signposts, fencing, and the rock wall of a lime kiln, where it came to a stop.” Chief Domby went on to conclude, “Absent any mechanical cause or direct evidence of any distraction, the investigation concluded that Mr. Stevenson failed to input sufficient steering to negotiate the left-hand curve, resulting in the crash.”
