However, drivers and residents in California recently woke up to a different type of news. According to local news reports, a Salinas woman intentionally drove her car into a semi-truck on the 101 freeway.

Reports indicate that the woman, identified as 34-year-old Iris Rivas, was driving the wrong way down Highway 101 in Monterey County, California, at around 7:14 p.m. on August 26. Rivas is said to have been driving a blue SUV that was traveling south on Highway 101’s northbound lanes, when she slammed into an 18-wheeler truck. Rivas was wearing a seatbelt at the time, and she survived the accident. She was taken to the hospital for emergency medical treatment with “major injuries.” Due to the nature of the accident, Rivas also underwent a mental health examination as part of her treatment at the hospital. The driver of the truck that Rivas crashed into has been identified as a man from Fresno. He survived the accident with minor injuries. The California Highway Patrol said of the accident, “During the investigation, it was determined Rivas intentionally drove (the) wrong-way into the semi-truck.” As a result, investigators indicated that Rivas may be facing criminal charges for the head-on accident.
