Pool and Beach Safety and Accident Risks
Summer is here and, after over a year of COVID-19 restrictions, many of us are ready to spend some time by the pool or at the beach. Regardless of which of these options is on your summer activity list, there are some safety precautions you should take to ensure that your fun day is not marred by disaster. Continue reading for some helpful safety tips.
Staying Safe by the Water
Although swimming in a pool is substantially different than taking a dip in the ocean, there are certain safety tips everyone should follow.
Here is a list of general swimming safety tips:
- Inspect the area for potential hazards.
- Swim only in an area or at a pool where a lifeguard is on duty.
- If you have children with you, always keep an eye on them, even if a lifeguard is present.
- If you are with an untrained swimmer or a child who is under the age of 5, stay within arm’s reach.
- Avoid drinking alcohol or consuming anything that may limit your ability to concentrate or maintain awareness of your surroundings.
You should also keep in mind that even if you are an experienced swimmer in the pool, you may not necessarily be skilled at swimming in natural bodies of water. Lakes, oceans, and rivers may have strong currents, rocks, kelp, or even animals that can pose a potential risk to your safety. If you are swimming in the ocean, you should avoid turning your back to the beach. Waves can hit quite hard and can easily take you off guard.
Below are some facts about drowning:
- When someone struggles to stay above the surface of the water, they might not have enough air to call for help. Therefore, in many cases, a drowning person may appear to be swimming, which is why it is essential to always pay attention to those around you. Someone who is drowning may make very few movements and seem lethargic.
- Drowning happens a lot faster than most of us think it does. Moreover, if someone is drowning, that person may panic and pull someone else nearby under in an effort to stay above the surface of the water.
Time spent in or near the water can be a lot of fun, but be sure to review safety precautions with your children to help prevent avoidable and potentially deadly accidents.
