Wrong-Way Car Accident Statistics – What Wrong-Way Drivers May Mean for You
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), wrong way driving incidents are those that occur “where a driver operates a vehicle the wrong way on a road or highway against the intended flow of traffic” and that “typically result in head-on collisions and are often fatal.” The NCSL notes that “[f]atalities associated with wrong-way driving are on the rise, prompting state legislatures and agencies to take action, such as installing wrong-way driving detection systems, launching public awareness campaigns and conducting research to better understand wrong-way driving patterns.” The NCSL found that only 3.7% of all fatal car accidents are caused by wrong-way driving, but that these accidents are often fatal, due to the nature of a head-on collision. The rise in wrong-way driving car accidents is also concerning, according to the NCSL. The years 2015-2018 saw a rise in wrong-way driving car accidents to the tune of a whopping 34% from the numbers in the period of 2010-2014. Roughly 500 people died in wrong-way car accidents in 2019 and 2020. The NCSL points to several contributing factors when it comes to the causes of wrong-way driving car accidents. Those factors include driving while intoxicated due to drugs or alcohol, the age of the driver, and the time of day.
