Driver Pleads Guilty in 2023 Fatal Car Crash in Ventura that Killed 1
The driver who started a chain-reaction-type accident that ultimately killed one man recently pleaded guilty to criminal charges. According to local news reports, 30-year-old Cody Zones of Lancaster, California pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.
In May of 2023, Zornes was driving northbound on Northwest 101 in a Ford F-550 pickup truck when he rear-ended 50-year-old Jose Zarate of Ventura. Zornes is believed by investigators to have been traveling at speeds greater than 65 miles per hour when the accident occurred. The initial impact with Zarate’s vehicle caused a “chain reaction crash”, and caused Zarate’s vehicle to burst into flames, trapping him inside. Sadly, Zarate died at the scene of the accident.
