California Residents Paint Curb Red in Response to New Pedestrian Safety Daylighting Law

California residents in at least one city have an interesting response to California’s new Daylighting Law, and at the very least, their actions are helping to spread the word about the law and how it aims to better protect California pedestrians. According to news reports, some residents in the Richmond District of San Francisco have taken to the streets with their paint brushes to help enforce the law that went into effect on January 1 of this year. Some residents in the Richmond District have reportedly painted the curbs of their streets red, so that those who run afoul of the new law are ticketed. Several tickets have reportedly already been issued by San Francisco police officers and those tickets are now being reviewed. Officials believe that the residents of the Richmond District who are painting the curbs are doing so at night, to avoid detection. Transit officials have indicated that the red paint job was not something that they were involved in and are sending in crews to “fix the paint job.” A spokesperson for the San Francisco Metro Transit Authority said, “Responding to these incidents is stretching our resources thin and causing confusion among residents.”
Red Curb Vigilantes Highlight New Law Passed in California on January 1–Pedestrian Safety Law Applies in Ventura
The new law that prompted the Richmond District residents to paint the curbs red went into effect on January 1, 2025. The new law prohibits vehicles from stopping, standing, or parking within 20 feet of the approach side of any crosswalk, whether marked or unmarked, and within 15 feet of crosswalks with curb extensions. The goal of the law is to reduce pedestrian accidents by improving visibility at intersections and crosswalks, allowing more time for drivers and pedestrians to catch a glimpse of each other before making a move. There is no doubt that pedestrian accidents in Ventura and throughout California have been an increasing concern, as pedestrian accidents are extremely dangerous, and often fatal. The new law provides greater protection for Ventura pedestrians and hopefully will reduce the number of pedestrian accident victims in the Ventura area.
