80-Year-Old Ojai, California Man Killed in Tragic Mobility Scooter Crash

According to the Ventura County Star, David Whalen, an 80-year-old man from Ojai, was riding his mobility scooter on Saturday, April 27 near Grand Avenue and Lion Street at around 3:40 p.m. when he was involved in a car accident that caused him to suffer a head injury and “visible abrasions to his arms.” Although, initially, Mr. Whalen’s injuries were thought to be non-life-threatening by local law enforcement authorities, out of an abundance of caution due to his advanced age, he was flown by helicopter to Ventura County Medical Center. Tragically, at the hospital, Mr. Whalen passed away from his injuries. Reports were unclear as to exactly how long Mr. Whalen had been at the hospital before he died.
Law enforcement officers involved in the accident investigation indicated that they did not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role in the tragic and fatal accident, but that their investigation was ongoing.
