Oxnard, California Man Convicted in Drunk Driving Car Accident that Killed Ventura Grandmother and Grandchild
Every driver that is on the road should be aware that drunk and intoxicated driving is never acceptable. Indeed, between television advertisements, local law enforcement campaigns, non-profit outreach, and basic driver’s education classes, all drivers are peppered with the important message that driving while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol is always a bad and dangerous idea. However, drivers still get behind the wheel while they are high or drunk, and innocent lives are taken far too often by drunk and intoxicated drivers. The senseless and tragic killing of a grandmother and her grandchild at the hands of a drunk driver in Oxnard demonstrates that drunk driving accidents still happen far too often.
According to local news reports, Jacob Anthony Caliboso, a 25-year-old man from Oxnard, California was “high on Xanax pills and marijuana” when he killed 55-year-old Elva Andrade and her 7-year old granddaughter, Nevaeh Gomez. The terrible accident occurred on June 22, 2020 on Pleasant Valley Road near Oxnard. Reports indicate that Mr. Caliboso was driving while intoxicated, at approximately 55 miles per hour, when he crossed over the center lane of the road. Ms. Andrade and her granddaughter were riding a motorcycle, and Mr. Caliboso collided with them head-on, killing both.
After the fatal accident, authorities located social media posts by Mr. Caliboso on Snapchat that showed him using large amounts of drugs on the day of the accident. Mr. Caliboso was ultimately convicted of second-degree murder for his role in the fatal accident. Ventura County Deputy District Attorney Stephanie Leija said of Mr. Caliboso’s conviction, “After four long years, Elva and Naveah’s family have received the justice they deserve…I am grateful to the California Highway Patrol for their tireless investigation into this case. Because of their efforts, the jury heard overwhelming evidence of the defendant’s knowledge of the dangers of using drugs while driving. The jury’s verdict sends the message that impaired driving is unacceptable and will never be tolerated in Ventura County.”
