16-Year-Old Thousand Oaks Girl’s Horrific Ordeal in Dog Attack Raises Questions about Rights and Options of Dog Attack Survivors in Ventura
The vicious and terrifying dog attack that injured one teenager and had a community on edge serves as a reminder of how dangerous dog attacks in Ventura can be, especially for the young. According to local news reports, in October 2022, a 16-year-old teenage girl was attacked at her home in Thousand Oaks by five Cane Corso dogs, seriously injuring the teen. Neighbors who witnessed the gruesome attack by the girl’s family dogs described a horrific scene, noting “I didn’t think too much of it until we heard a little girl scream, and I jumped up and saw the girl on the ground with the dogs on top of her, and her mom was on top trying to shield her…The dogs were just going at it.” The same neighbor also stated that he was with his girlfriend at the time that he witnessed the dog attack, and, although he tried to help the young teen and her mother, he was forced to retreat when the dogs turned on him. The man said of his efforts to stop the dog attack and further injury to the young teen and her mother, “I got half way out into the street… The dogs started coming after me. My girlfriend yelled at me to ‘Come back in, come back in’ and sure enough three of them chased me…I barely made it back into the gate without them catching me.”
The 16-year-old girl was hospitalized as a result of the attack and was admitted in “serious condition.” The girl’s mother, who was also involved in the attack, suffered “minor injuries”. The dogs are said to have been living at the home with the mother and daughter, and it was unclear what led to the incident. One witness expressed surprise at the events, stating, “I have nothing bad to say about the family or the dogs…It’s the first time I’ve ever seen this.” L.A. County Animal Control took custody of the dogs.
